THE BACKGROUND
In the intial years the clusters formed out of the research and projects carried
out by the academics of Cambridge University. The involvement of the
government and the numerous cost advantages of Cambridge as a location for
setting up facilities gave thrust to this industrial cluster further.
Silicon Fen is situated in and around Cambridge, in the East of England. It does
not have any geographical boundary but is within a 20-mile8 radius around

THE CHALLENGES
In 1997, Segal Quince published The Cambridge Phenomenon MkII14, which
criticized the lack of infrastructure and the national government’s apathy towards
growth of high technology businesses.Apart fromthis, the Fenwas affected, though
not as adversely as the companies in the Silicon Valley, by the dotcom bust in the
late ’90s. Silicon Fen aspires to be the next Silicon Valley and CambridgeUniversity
